It's always been a dream of mine to work in a pirate DVD shop. Throughout the developed world, internet downloads are fast making that particular line of work obsolete. Fortunately for me, it seems the memo didn't get through to the hard working pirate DVD men of Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Chinatown KL is one of the last bastions of this noble profession. Sure, the salary would be low. Perks? Well, none to speak of. Asshole customers - aplenty. But, that wouldn't stop me from being the hardest working pirate DVD seller I could be. I GIVE YOU GOOD DVD PRICE BOSS COME HAVE LOOK I HAVE A SHOP BOSS GOOD COPY BOSS TAKE A LOOK!
Inevitably, the job wouldn't last. Much like switchboard-operators, pinsetters, lamplighters, and airline pilots, my chosen profession will soon be rendered obsolete by technology. I would find myself stuck, in Kuala Lumpur, jobless, eating nothing but Nasi Kandar, Mee Rebus, Chicken Rice, occasionally roast duck, BBQ pork, char kuey teow, or assorted Indian deserts. No problem, I have a plan B. My other dream. All my life I have wanted to be a Taxi Driver. A fancy Datsun, cool moustache, polyester slacks. HEY BOSS YOU WANT A TAXI...SORRY BOSS METER NOT WORKING I GIVE YOU GOOD PRICE BOSS!
Roaming the streets, I would hunt the ultimate prey - white tourists. I'd cling to the bus station where the airport express arrives regularly with a full load of fresh, white, meat. For the fare of a four minute ride, I could eat like a king, drink myself stupid, and still have change to buy a fresh Ralph Lauren knockoff polo.
But, these are all just the enchanted dreams of a wide-eyed wanderer. For now, seven nights in the truly asian splendor that is Kuala Lumpur, would suffice. Food, architecture, culture, muslims, and food. Yes, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - where dreams can come true.

Sanj - I have a terrible secret. Not only did I not try the frog legs in Chinatown, I have NEVER eaten frogs legs. I've eaten a lot of shit in my time, by so far, no frogs legs. I'll start looking out for some...

KL rocks!! My fav bits, watching a riot unfold outside my hotel from the indian ravers in the club underneath the hotel at 3am. Love a bit of anarchy!! Also watching the local police marching down the markets accepting their daily bribes from pirate operators, wish I had photos but too scared to take them. Bless your cotton socks N. Counting the days till we catch up. XO
